Let's get real, creating a list of new year resolutions can often end in self criticism for not achieving them. In addition, 2020 was full of uncertainty and roadblocks to achieving goals set. So, where do we go from here in 2021?
In reflecting back, a lot of my energy was focused on trying to control things that were out of my control. This ultimately led to me more anxious. I found my brain space being occupied by worries and not being present in my daily life. I needed to address these worries and gain some perspective.
I made a list of things that were not in my control and weighing on me:
- the action of others
- the lack of action of others
- missing hugs from friends and family
- the spread of the dangerous virus
I then examined things that were in my control:
- calling a friend/family member
- wearing a mask
- taking a deep breath and feeling the sun on my face
- voting
- journaling
- planning a trip for the future
This activity helped me realize there are parts of circumstances that I have the power to manage. I can be mindful and let go of things out of my control while redirecting my perspective. I also determined that staying present and noticing anxiety increasing will help me assess and take an active role in the moment.
I challenge you to examine what your focus has been and how it impacted you. See download to create your list.
How can you use this reflection to set an intention for this year?
